Idea Napkin no. 1

1)I am personally a musician, and write songs occasionally so that kind of inspired me to think of this idea. My software would be geared towards people who professionally or independently release music for profit. While I don't plan on becoming a professional musician in my lifetime, I might somewhere down the line try to release an album, and it would be nice knowing that this tool exists.

2)My product is a software that reads an audio file (of their recorded song) and evaluates the components of the song (tempo, rhythm, chords, melody), and gives feedback on how similar it is to other released songs. The point of this is to ensure one is not plagiarizing music (even if its unintentional). A good comparison is like turnitin.com but with music.

3)The customers would be Singer/Songwriters, musicians, and record labels. These are all in the music industry and release content to the public.

4)Its valuable because it...

-lets them know that their song is truly unique and their own creation. (did not have too much outside influence or inspiration)

-can provide a resource to ensure they won't accidentally get sued, or be liable for copy right infringement

5)What I have that nobody else does is this idea... I don't believe their exists anything like it currently.

I think all these elements fit together well. I have a musical background, I know there a need exists, I know that customers care about this need, and I would be the only serve like this on the market.

  1. I remember an incident where software like this could have been very beneficial for an artist. They had accidentally used a lyric out of a song and it wasn't blatantly obvious but none the less they did it. But long story short they sued for plagiarizing and the lawsuit alone was probably more than enough to pay for this technology in which you are describing. Especially as the music industry is growing so exponentially it could save a lot of people a lot of money.

  2. Hi Beau, I really like your idea. I've recently started trying to produce my own music and a tool like this could really help someone like yourself, or me get off the ground.

  3. Beau,

I think this idea is great! In a day in age where technology is ruling, I am surprised this has not been invented yet. This is great for passionate music lovers such as yourself. I actually had a similar conversation at one of my internships recently. My boss wants to remake a song for a marketing campaign but is afraid of it sounding too much like the original. Hurry up and get this thing out there man!

  4. Hey Beau! I think your idea is so unique! I don't have much knowledge about the music industry but I definitely think that this could be a great tool! There are always so many articles about how one musician is getting sued because they plagiarized another musicians song. This will not only help the music industry, but save a lot of potential headaches.

  5. Hi Beau,

Any chance you watch the show Silicon Valley? I think that's actually very similar to the original idea the main character had when he was creating his program Pied Piper, but as the show's progressed it's moved in a whole different direction. It's certainly a good and useful idea, especially in this modern world where IP law is going a little crazy.
