For this assignment I picked the segment of Musicians/Songwriters. As this is a pretty niche market, it was difficult to find people to interview. I was able to find songwriters through the Nashville Songwriting Association online and kept calling people until they were willing to do an interview.
Because most of the people I came in contact with aren't releasing big hits. They aren't likely to be worried about copyright infringement over songs. The importance of this issue also depends on the genre of music one creates. If someone is more likely to be writing Pop/rock songs which consist of similar 4 chord songs this software might apply to them more. Regardless it seems in the songwriting community the only method to ensure that you're not creating a song too similar to something else is to show the songs to others and get their opinions.
The people I interviewed, once aware of this need, stated that they would look up reviews online of the product before purchase. It was also discovered that customers would want the option of either a monthly/yearly subscription or a per song cost, in order to cater to people who write many songs as well as few.
It seemed the awareness is there for the segment of Singer/Songwriters, and that many would be interested in my concept as long as the interface is east to use and the software is proven to work. Because this is a unique idea, and there is not currently a market for music plagiarism software I would have to somehow advertise well enough so that these songwriters know this service exists. This is a product that one would have to know about and look up online if they were interested in buying. Its not a physical product, and there wouldn't be any stores, so this need only comes up once they have competed a song and want to post it (in no place in particular).

Beau,
ReplyDeleteAgain, this is a fantastic idea. I think the people you interviewed were logical in their concerns over ease of software. A lot of new things can seem challenging and can scare off potential users. If you can make this software easy for anyone to use and fairly priced, you will have a hit!
Beau,
ReplyDeleteI think this could be a great product! I wish to work in the music industry one day and I could see many songwriters in Nashville and other places utilize this product. It does seem there are some kinks that need to be straightened out before people would buy the product. However, with the little work I've done with songwriters thus far, if you could work out those kinks it would be very useful.
Hey Beau! I think this would be very beneficial! I like the way you interviewed the people because it is hard to find people to interview that are actually putting out a song. It is also really handy that it is not a physical product, rather something that is online that can be subscribed to! This aspect of your product is really unique and I think it is what is going to make your product thrive in the music industry.
ReplyDeleteHello Beau!
ReplyDeleteIt is interesting idea and it provide information of Musicians/Songwriters. Your idea is unique and creative. I also think that there is not currently a market for music plagiarism software. advertising is the most important to success in this business. If songwriters know this service exist, then it probably used for them. Hope I can use this software in online someday. Great job !
I also agree that this is a creative idea. I wonder how current songwriters for elite talent avoid plagiarizing others' work today, and it seems to be somewhat of an issue with the recent lawsuits that you mentioned. I think with more research and maybe narrowing the target market to a specific genre to start the business would help it get the recognition that others would start to use it. It seems like you are on to something here that is not in the music industry yet.

ReplyDeleteWhat a great idea. How do you know if when you're writing it's not just something you have heard before and are creatively reproducing it. I don't write a lot of music, but, I do write a lot of papers and do this all the time when I'm writing "did I just think that or read it somewhere". I also like the idea of pricing differences, I think that helps to cover more market area.
ReplyDeleteBeau,
ReplyDeleteI think this is an idea to be utilized for the pop genre as stated in Interview #2. I think she did not have much need for it because she was in the country genre and as she said Pop sells more. I think you would encounter more people with the need as more people probably write Pop music which increases the chances of plagiarism alert. Remain steadfast as it's a great concept in my opinion.
Hey Beau! This is my first time seeing your posts about your concept, I think it's great! If only Ed Sheeran had a product like yours back in 2012, huh ;) I think that, if advertised properly, this product could change the music industry. I'm sure there are plenty of cases of songwriters inadvertently copying songs they have heard before, and your product would let them know that before they make a costly mistake.
